A Mediterranean bathroom – a touch of the south

The very word “Mediterranean” conjures up images of Italy and Spain, summer, beaches and the sea. A Mediterranean-style design will bring a laid-back but elegant holiday vibe into your bathroom.

What are the features of the Mediterranean style?

The word “Mediterranean” comes from the Latin for “centre of the earth” and refers to Spanish, Italian and Greek architecture. A connection with nature is another important aspect of Mediterranean bathroom design. Choose natural colours and materials similar to those you find in bathrooms on the Spanish islands or in Greece.

Curved shapes give Mediterranean bathrooms a sense of enduring elegance. In larger rooms, columns can complement the effect, together with simple and elegant looks for furniture and taps.

Natural materials and textures

Natural materials such as rustic wood, terracotta tiles, natural stone, rattan and ceramic are a great choice for the Mediterranean style. No matter whether you are designing your main bathroom or a guest toilet in a Mediterranean style, choose natural materials as your base and use textures to add visual appeal.

Mediterranean colours for your bathroom

Your colour scheme will differ depending on which Mediterranean style you select for your bathroom. For example, brilliant white and azure blue are typical of Greece, while Spanish bathrooms are often decorated in sand and beige shades. In general, earthy hues such as terracotta, sand or beige work well as the base colour. You can then add touches of bright red, blue, green or violet.

Airy curtains and light textiles

Mediterranean bathrooms are characterised by a natural, airy feel. Apart from their practical side, soft towels in bright colours and a light-coloured bath rug will create a relaxing atmosphere in the room. Light-coloured, lightweight curtains on the windows will let in enough light but protect you from prying eyes.

Plants are an important feature in a Mediterranean bathroom. Choose plants from the Mediterranean region: varieties of lavender, rosemary and citrus will also bring a pleasant fragrance to the room.
