At a glance

  • Towels should be washed separately by colour and material to achieve the best results.

  • The recommended washing temperature for cotton towels is 60 degrees. Microfibre towels should be washed at 40 degrees.

  • Fabric softeners reduce towels’ absorbency - choose vinegar instead.

  • Towels can be washed with items such as bedlinen, but preferably not with clothing.

How to wash towels

You should wash your bathroom textiles regularly to keep them clean and fresh. Are you not sure about the best way to care for your towels? Find out everything you need to know about washing towels here.

Washing new towels before first use

It is a good idea to put your towels through a wash cycle before using them for the first time. On the one hand, this is more hygienic as the towels will have come from a shop and might have been handled by other customers. On the other hand, washing towels before first use improves their absorbency.

Which detergent to use for towels

The right detergent will help to keep your towels fluffy, soft and absorbent. Use an all-purpose detergent, ideally a washing powder, to wash white and cream-coloured towels. These products contain some bleach to lighten textiles. Coloured towels, on the other hand, should be washed with a special colour detergent to keep them looking fresh.

Should you use a fabric softener when washing towels?

There is no need to use a fabric softener for towels. Your laundry will feel extra soft, but this is not particularly practical for towels as it makes them less absorbent. Rather than a softener, you can add a little vinegar to the fabric softener compartment to make your towels fluffier.

Common mistakes when washing towels

A few common mistakes when washing towels can cause the textiles to become less soft or reduce their absorbency. They can also affect the material. Take care to avoid these errors.

Excessive use of detergent

Too much washing powder can make your towels feel hard. On the other hand, too little washing powder means less efficient cleaning. As a general rule, always follow the instructions provided by the detergent manufacturer to use the right dose. If your laundry feels hard when you take it out of the machine, wash it again, but this time without detergent.

Overloading the washing machine

To avoid damage, the washing machine drum should not be loaded beyond the maximum capacity specified by the manufacturer. Overloading the machine may affect its cleaning performance. Ideally, leave space equivalent to around two clenched fists.

Failure to observe the care instructions

Towel manufacturers generally provide clear care instructions and it is important to observe these. The care instructions include the correct temperature for washing towels and whether or not the textiles can be tumble-dried. Failure to follow the care instructions may reduce the absorbency of your towels or make them feel less soft.
